Second Workshop

After researching a few artists I was still unsure on what I wanted to make or what technique I wanted to carry on further, so I used this workshop to try out another technique.

Cutting a piece into small strips then manipulating into different images

I find the hardest of this project, is the daunting fact of just having a blank piece of paper, that you can turn into anything with a scalpel and some glue. Also, looking over and seeing what Richard has produced in minimal time also makes you question your own work as it's just so good.

Here are a few manipulations of what I made using the above technique

Initial Research

Won Park

After having some time to think about possible ideas of what to make using paper, I remembered that a few years back, I loved art using Dollar bills. Won Park is a paper artist who uses the printed money as his choice of media.

There is no glue or tape or even cutting involved, if any of his designs were unfolded they could be used like any other money.

What I like so much about this style of art is that it can all be created just by folding, such a simple task to create brilliant outcomes.

Creating origami sculptures out of hundreds of sheets of paper is amazing, but creating interesting designs from a small piece of paper is incredible.

I decided to have a go at making a T-shirt using a dollar bill and a handy youtube guide

Richard Sweeney

Richard is a unique artist who works with creating amazing pieces of artwork using different types of paper and card. It isn't just origami like I originally thought it would be like. Some of the paper sculptures he has made are incredible. You can stare at them for a good 10 minutes and it's still hard to get your head around some of the designs he has created.

My favourite piece by Richard has to be this Tessellation piece. Although not a full photograph of the sculpture, the cleanness of the folds and the way the shadows are formed just makes this fascinating.

Some of his other work:

Partial Shell

After he first demonstrated how to make simple shapes in our first workshop, I thought it looked quite easy, until I tried for myself and realised just how much patience it takes, and one little rip can ruin the whole piece. A delicate but rewarding art.

Working With Paper

In our first workshop with Richard Sweeney, we were given the task of creating patterns and objects out of just an A5 piece of paper and a Scalpel, no adhesives allowed. Although quite tricky to make sure everything slots together, I'm finding this really fun to experiment with.
